Are tests such as the SAT truly measures of "objective merit?" Many white families can afford to send their offspring to expensive private schools and hire tutors for test preparation. We also know, because word gets out, that there are those who pay people to take the SAT and other tests for their children. A black or brown child who has a lower score may have all the native ability, and more, of those more privileged children, but absent the advantages that money bring, do not have the same opportunities to make those abilities manifest in a test which purportedly measures "merit," but which actually tests class capital.
