Yes, Nature Really Works That Way

The story you are about to hear is true. I have changed no names because I don’t know who did it.

Parts of my yard are flush with flowers. Other sections have to wait for seeds to germinate and cover the bare (and ugly) soil. Thus is the case with part of my downhill yard. Every summer, I sow trailing nasturtiums so that I get an absolute flow of round, green leaves punctuated with multi-colored saucers. I can’t get enough of them; or, maybe I can.

After sowing my seeds, I practiced some poor gardening hygiene. I left the remaining packets in a bowl outdoors rather than bringing them back inside. I know better, but sometimes I’m lazy. A few days later, I noticed that the packages had been gnawed.

I had no one to blame but myself.

Fast forward to Memorial Day. My husband and I had cleaned our back porch of its winter debris, and we were ready to enjoy the first outdoor meal of the season. As we wiped down the railing, we noticed a variety of wildlife poop we hadn’t seen before. We have a number of nuisance animals who visit and leave us “gifts.” We went down our visitors roster. “No, we know what bird poop looks like, and this doesn’t seem to be it. Hmm, the squirrels don’t usually…
