Because America focuses so faithfully on its English-speaking forebears, one would think that the Spanish, who were in the Americas well before the English, weren't present at all. Part of that is because so many Americans don't want to acknowledge that, after indigenous languages, Spanish was the first language spoken on the continent and theirs was the first successful colony.
