Black and brown children adopted by white families are "pets." They're a novelty, and they lack agency because they didn't elect to be a part of that family. As you discovered, when you invited a person of color into your community as an equal, then you were surprised at what you found.

During Amy Coney Barrett's confirmating hearings, I cringed at how she described her black, adopted children. Look it up.
