Long ago, in our youths, to every candy, there was a season and a time, and a purpose unto children. Candy canes, peppermint flavors, and anything wrapped in foil, heralded December even before the calendar did. Chocolate-covered cherries, saucy Conversation Hearts, and red velvet boxes may as well have been stamped with a giant 14. Jelly beans, candy corn; every treat had its season, and generally that was the only season it had.

There were some year-round candies. Sno-Caps™, Junior Mints™, Raisinets™, and Good and Plenty™, in containers as big as a Kleenex™ box, were standards, but their time was Saturday, and their place was movie theaters. It was dark, so our parents couldn’t see the new cavities we were creating with every bite. Usually, though, we created our cavities around holiday times.

Think back to Hershey’s Kisses™. Once upon a time, they appeared in one version. They were tear-shaped chocolates dressed in silver foil, and they came in a dark brown bag. A brown bag! Everybody loved Hershey’s Kisses™, but there was nothing special about them. They were silver-wrapped teardrops with a little paper flag in a chocolate-colored bag.
