Do you remember the controversy about Rue in The Hunger Games movie? First, people who read the book could not imagine a black character, so they somehow overlooked her physical description. When the film premiered, they were indignant that the character was black and accused the director of "not following the book." When they finally understood that in fact Rue was meant to be black, some of them, AND THIS IS TRUE, retro-actively took back their sympathy for her. "Now that I know she's black, I just don't feel sorry for her anymore."

That's how racist Americans are. If they can withdraw their sympathy for a fictional character because she's not white, imagine the lack of sympathy those of us who are black in actual life get.
