To the “couch sitters” out there. Word is that young Black Americans (mostly male) plan to sit out this election because no one has “approached” them to make a case for voting for the Harris/Walz ticket. This puzzles me, scares me, and, to be honest, sickens me. In 2016, Donald Trump, cynically, asked Black Americans, “What have you got to lose?” Let me tell you. I may not convince you, but at least I can inform you.

1. Your Freaking Rights as a Citizen

The Trump administration, a Republican Congress, Republican-dominated state legislatures, and the Supreme Court have increasingly restricted our voting and civil rights.

Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act requires jurisdictions with a history of discrimination to submit any proposed changes in voting procedures to the U.S. Department of Justice or a federal district court in D.C. before it goes into effect to ensure the change would not harm minority voters.

Southern states had been attempting to escape from the provisions of the Voting Rights Act for years, and after Barack Obama’s 2008 election, they moved Hell and Earth to limit Black voting power. Shelby County, Alabama, sued to remove Section 5.
