Five Terms that Democrats Need to Lose Immediately

Part IV. KILL “Pro-Life.”

I began writing my first three essays concerning how Democrats make wonderful debating points, but lose arguments before they begin by using terms that Republicans have crafted. Republicans have made a science of inventing emotionally-laden terms for public policy issues. Unfortunately, these terms become so popular that Democrats begin to use them. No. Just no. When we use their language, then we reinforce their ideas.

I had promised a little essay about “Identity Politics,” which was meant to be Number Four, but I got sidetracked watching the January 6th hearings. Then, something world-changing happened, and I knew that there was definitely a term we needed to lose.

Since the lopsided Supreme Court overturned the precedent of Roe v. Wade, that jolt has made folks realize that “pro-life” is neither a fact nor a reality in practice, but a sweet-sounding talking point. “Pro-life.” Who isn’t “pro-life?” Are we against “life?” Are we for death? In a word; no.

There is more to life than leaving the womb. If a future life is valued, then the society in which it will live should provide its mother with meaningful and affordable pre-natal care. If life begins at conception, then so should concern for it. After birth, that life should be provided…
