For all of those who are just “astounded” (clutch those pearls) that “someone would put their entire identity into their skin color…” black folks have not done that. We did not import white people into this country, treat them cruelly, sell their children, and build a country on their labor. Neither did we redline, blackball, post “whites only” signs, institute Jim Crow, de jure segregation, and all of the other insults I have named. We posit AN identity (where did the author say that his skin color was his entire identity?) based on skin color as one of many identifies. It is not our doing that white people (and don’t argue given the examples I’ve raised) judge OUR identities based on skin color, presume lesser competence on our parts, and wonder whether or not WE’RE the ones who will “fit in.” Just stop it. Stop making excuses for your behavior, look at what was justified in the past, thinly covered over in recent history, and has spewed out like projectile vomiting in the present. Just stop it. Look not to your stars; look at yourself.
