Gosh, I guess I'm a meanie. After 2016, I decided that since it was obvious that whites don't care about our feelings, I wasn't going to act in a way that spares theirs. I'm one of those nicely-assimilated black people who grew up middle class and "talking white" (in others' view, not my own) and because I am very small, people perceive me as "cute" and not a threat. I consider that my secret superpower--looking harmless while being confrontational. I'm not rude. I don't look for trouble, and while the circumstances of my life require that I will spend more time around whites than not, folks know that I will take them on. In the past, like most of us, I "swallowed" more offenses, but those days are gone.
