Hello, novice gardeners, whoever you are.

I hope your troubles are few.

This simple advice should take you far,

I was a novice once, too.

Novice gardeners, I know who you are. You are urban aspirants, who want to one-up your neighbors. You are recent retirees who finally have time for leisure and money to spend. You are the couple who wants to grow enough food for your family to consume, to store, and to take the neighborhood by storm with your tomato sauce. You are a farm-to-table sort, who wants to serve garden-to-table food from your cultivated yard, or you are inaugurating a life away from the grid.

Whoever you are, you are eager (or should I say “keen?”) to get growing.

Harvests of vegetables so heavy they bend their vines, enough fragrant flowers to cut for your home, and your own canned goods… Oh, the visions! You are young at gardening. I am an old, gray gardenness. My three loves in life (other than my husband) are writing, gardening, and telling people what to do.
