"How would you feel if you were white?" I don't know, but I can guess. I am a black woman married to a tall, good-looking, well-educated white male. Our system of patriarchy dictates that I have the status of an "honorary white person" when he's around, so I get spoken to respectfully, taken seriously, and all of the other etc's that go with that territory. How do I feel? I feel like myself, but a "myself" that has a much easier time in the world.

I believe you know what I'm talking about, because I bet you get treated differently when you're alone than when you're with your husband. You share his status rather than the other way around, and I'm sure you've had some surprising experiences when you see how other whites can act around those they believe don't deserve their regard.
