I am extremely fortunate, and, perhaps, exceedingly demanding. If I can't have frank, uncomfortable conversations with my white friends about "race," then they're not my friends, period. Discomfort is one of the hard challenges of friendship, but my job is not to make white people feel comfortable. Yes, it is on both of us to listen, but it is on them to appreciate that others live lives under circumstances foreign to them.
