I guess I'm one of the ones who "doesn't get it." Will Smith perpetuated the trope that black men have no self-control. He let his "lizard brain" out, and it has nothing to do with "defending" his wife.

I don't follow the lives of the Smiths, so I knew nothing about Jada's condition. I do know, however, that the Smiths have made their private lives a public commodity. They have little right to be offended when they have so often put themselves out for ridicule. Yes, black women have been abused--I don't need Will Smith or any other black man to resort to violence to "protect" me. I can do that myself if the offense is mere words. Now if someone had come after me physically, then I know that my husband is ready to go, but that didn't happen. And didn't we see Will LAUGHING AT THE JOKE? He gets no pass from me.

Smith ruined the evening for the viewing public, and he ruined the ceremony for every awardee who won after that incident. Other, much more worthy events, such as Questlove's Oscar, CODA's win as best picture, and the show's all-black production crew were overpowered by stupidity. I'd "disinvite" him forever.
