I have a friend who likes to ask "controversial" questions. The one he asks most frequently is why black Americans continue to put all of their eggs in the Democratic basket. "Because," I tell him, "the eggs in the other basket are rotten."

We often want to see substantive change during a particular president's administration, such as we hoped to see during Barack Obama's term, but don't always appreciate why it doesn't happen. Remember, the Democrats have plenty of black representatives, but there are still more white ones. White people, by and large, are not going to concentrate on policies that benefit only us. We have to depend more on those policies that "lift all boats," such as social justice, civil rights, and more accessible health care.

Many blacks were disappointed with Barack Obama, but, as I like to remind us, he lost the House in 2010, when not enough of his 2008 voters showed up for the mid-term elections. The Republicans gained a majority OF ONLY SEVEN VOTES. Frankly, better turnout would have saved our majority, and many of the programs that people hoped to see implemented could have taken place. No president is a genie or magician, able to wave a wand and make policy happen. He/she needs the backup of Congress. Our job is to try to elect the Congress that will address our needs. Have you seen this; my favorite video? Please give it a peek. It has changed a lot of minds. Please share it everywhere.
