I perceive the OceanGate tragedy to be one of those crystallizing events that make clear to us, perhaps unpleasantly, just who we are. The George Floyd murder laid bare the difference between black and white justice. The OceanGate rescue, which spared no effort or penny for five people, stands in contrast to the 700 lives lost near the coast of Greece. So much closer to land, so much easier to reach, and so few resources needed to rescue them, but we didn't.
Ever so often, we need to revisit the myth of Icarus.
