I spend a lot of time (notice I didn't say "a great deal") around white people. While I employ the received vernacular, which is the vernacular my family owns, I do not seek to hide my black self from white people. If you have the privilege of "being yourself" around me, then I have the privilege of "being myself" around you. It's too exhausting to be someone you're not if you're going to be out in the world. As you say, we already stand out. So, why not stand out more? If you are white and my friend, then you know this already..
