I subscribe to both Gardeners' World and English Gardening and have for years. There was a third, rather short-lived one to which I subscribed as well. The properties are lavish, and are almost all baronial estates. Of course they would have to be so to show the varieties of plantings and entrance the eye of the reader. I have also attended the Chelsea Garden Show, so I've seen the variety of very high-end merchandise available. In fact, as I think of it, I subscribe to several U.S. gardening magazines as well, and I've never seen a $100,000 greenhouse advertised in any of them. Gardeners' World, geared to the more everyday gardener, is of course, more down to earth, so to speak.
Both publications , however, contain many ads (or should I say "adverts?") for high-end clothing and equipment; I know because my indulgent husband occasionally buys it for me.
I'm not saying that you're most Brits, but what I've observed of Brits is that they enjoy a healthy sense of humor (along with a good , strong ale) and would certainly recogize my essay as both the practical and whimsical item it is meant to be. As for the "who else is there?" I recognize that there are more people than we who reside in the U.S. If not, then I couldn't have written about Brits!
