I will gladly admit to watching the Andy Griffith Show, because I was of an age to watch it when it aired originally. The reason I respected the show was because even if it occasionally showed its few Black citizens in crowd scenes, at least they existed. Few shows of the period had any Black presence at all. Decades later, one could watch a show like Friends or Seinfeld and believe that no Black people existed in New York City, of all places. When Seinfeld had the occasional Brown person on an episode, they were generally Spanish speaking and had roles as maids and waiters.
