If you are indigenous to North, Central, or South America, then you are an American, period. If you, or your ancestors, came from anywhere else, then you're the immigrant. For some reason, whites agree on what was pretty much an open-continent policy for Europeans, no matter how distant their origins. Indigenous people, on the other hand, are considered interlopers on their own continents. I wonder why more people don't ask how white Europeans gave themselves the license to decide who belongs where.
