Ignore the stars. I made an error, darn it. Maybe it is ad hominem. I can’t stand John McWhorter, and I said why. He wants to make his name as one of the “good” people of color by making white people feel as though racism exists because black and brown people don’t know how to get it together. For people who don’t want to admit to systemic racism or to change their behavior, then, yes, he’s a perfect “Toby” and allows them to keep doing what they’re doing free of guilt.
I read John McWhorter, sometimes, because I appreciate his research on language. Because I subscribe to a few “higher-brow” magazines, I see his views on language and his wrong-headed opinions about “race” there. I would not know how much I disagreed with him if I hadn’t read him first. I don’t know how he came to his point of view, but he’s got it twisted. It’s “lens,” by the bye.
