I'm black, and I'm proud of it. However, as evident as my skin color is and as much as it's the first thing people perceive, black is not THE ONLY THING I AM. I am one of many things, and I don't appreciate others, including other black and brown people, telling me that my interests are not "black enough." If you, a person who looks like me, have let someone else get into your head that you are restricted in your thoughts, interests, and activities, then you have been colonized more than you think. What gives anyone the license to tell you who or what you can be based only your skin color or the continent from which your ancestors originated?
Am I suggest to the indignities that other people of color are? Am I judged based on how I look other than who I am? The answers are yes. I'm black enough. That's all I need.
