I'm curious. Who was keeping records of how much acreage California was losing to wildfires prior to 1800? California wasn't a state until 1850. That doesn't mean that it was empty of people, as we know it was settled early, but I'm wondering how the literate folks, the ones in the missions, who were klling natives, determined what area was "California" and what wasn't.
