In the marketplace of ideas, white people already believe that their ideas are superior to those of people of color. They don't fidget because the idea is bad, they fidget because they do not want to give the speaker the respect of listening. The next time you find yourself in a situation like that, see if a white person offers the same idea ten minutes later. It will then be accepted as if it were an Einstein theory.
The author is not arguing about who's prettier. What she is saying is that because whites assume that theirs is the standard for beauty, and have forwarded this belief for centuries; others have become indoctrinated. The fact is, although you will notice that someone's skin is different than yours, the meaning of that difference is a result of systemic racism.
