I've heard plenty of native Spanish speakers refer to themselves this way. Perhaps I spend more time around progressives than do most. English has not imposed a construction on Spanish; many Latinx people I know prefer the term precisely because it eliminates the gender distinction. They want the spoken language to recognize societal change. There's nothing wrong with that. Society always resists changes to spoken language.
