I was first introduced to Medium sometime before COVID, when a fellow writing workshop attendee mentioned “getting that little deposit from Medium every month.” Anything that gives me a little deposit every month, other than a sperm bank or an STD, is a go for me. I asked her about Medium and she described how it works. I looked it up and was fascinated by the number of topics and writers. (And claps!)

It took me months to work up the courage to write a piece, and, indeed, I was rewarded with that monthly deposit. I cherished that first .19 cents, which is the lifetime take for that particular article. I began to write essays that were slightly more popular, garnering such life-changing sums as a princessly .46 cents, or even .65 cents.

Slowly, very slowly, somehow or other, I began to gain a following.

After three and-a-half years, and one miraculous “boost,” I have grasped the magic ring. I now have 1,000 Followers. Medium, that one article you “boosted” was a reprint with a different title. Wasn’t it good enough the first time?
