My Miguelitro, there’s something about my opinion that intrigues you. Good for you! I hope that means that you’re reading and attempting to consider my opinions seriously, even if you don’t agree. Your “question,” however, is not really a question. Here goes.

Who are the “used-to-be-brown-until-the-Republicans-courted-you” people? When did I say that race is dependent upon political affiliation? It isn’t to me, although I agree with Joe Biden that if you’re black and you decide to vote Republican, then you have some identity issues.

You may have heard of the recent trend of more Latinx voters choosing the Republican party. One of the reasons they have done so is because Republicans have courted them using what is their “white-adjacency,” which means that Spanish-speaking people were until recently reviled by most Republicans. Think of what Donald Trump said, and still says, about Mexicans. Republicans understand “If you can’t beat them, then get them to join you.” They have courted Spanish-speaking and lighter-brown folks by telling them, “You’re not really them, you’re us.” Because adjacency to whiteness is so desirable, many people who should know better choose to align themselves with the Republican Party.

There is a group of people who have the agency (what does humanity have to do with it?) to make up its own collective mind about its political affiliation, but, unfortunately, it makes a mistake. That group of people is the white working class. Based on the policies that each party offers, that group of people should be Democrats, which have had policies that are friendlier to working-class people. However, the Republican/Democratic divide has become based on race, so too many working-class people prefer to be affiliated with the skin privilege of “whiteness” rather than receiving economic justice. (Don’t take my word for it; most economists will tell you that if you’re willing to hear it.)

One of the ongoing puzzlements Socialists have is why the white working class doesn’t align itself with black and brown people, because their economic interests are so similar. For some reason, they just don’t seem to get where their interests lie! Uh, Socialists, white working-class people prefer skin privilege over economic security, so you’re never going to have the class warfare you desire. (It would make sense to have it though.)

So, Miguelitro, I have answered your statement posed as a question. At the risk of sounding really snarky, I’m going to say that you know better and you should be smarter than that.

Despite all of the well-researched historical information I gave you demonstrating my point, THAT question is the gist of what you got? You’re not the incisive thinker; you’re the outlier. As I said, I believe you’re smarter than that. I hope so.
