Perhaps you are not aware of how King was viewed during his life, or you are misinterpreting the method behind his mission. Without lifting a hand against the whites who brutalized them, King's followers and associates gained the sympathy of Northern whites and politicians until the U.S. HAD to recognize some measure of rights and pass them into law.
