Sadly, most Americans are uninformed about how the federal government works and who's responsible for paying what. We have a middle-of-the-country relative who complains constantly about taxes. We asked him what his tax rate was, and he didn't know. He didn't even know about the country's debt/hostage issue. Maybe I'm an Eastern elitist, but I'm really tired of having people who know very little about very little having the power to affect my life's parameters.
