Sadly, too many people (I was about to say "whites," but it's not confined to them) believe in the social fiction of "race" and view blackness as some sort of taint. You may consider it an insult to be called "brave," but white women who married black men in the 60s took a lot of "isht," including being shunned by their own. It could not have been an easy road.
