Some blacks "owned" slaves who were family members. Others owned slaves to protect blacks from abuse by white owners. Some, as you might expect, were probably almost as selfish and cruel as whites. However, as you point out, black involvement in slave ownership was a needle in a haystack. However, apologists for slavery and present racism don't want to admit that.
