Super, Mr. C., aka "Steadfast Mister," is a Ph.D in Philosophy and has seen the desire to seek knowledge for its own sake and to engage in difficult, and critical, thinking disappear as more and more people want to earn technical degrees that will make them money. His school, a rather well-known one, is considering consolidating its Philosophy and Religion Departments, as the number of majors in either shrinks.
We can't ignore social media, which encourages people to believe that not only are their opinions their right, but that those opinions have the right to be considered seriously. They are not. People don't want to do the hard work of research and engage in the process of learning and thinking. It's not only hard to "do Philosophy." It's also hard to "do" many of the other Liberal Arts, all of which teach habits of thinking. We feel your pain.
