Little Old Lady versus Big, Bad Snow
A New England Winter Tale by Super Mrs. C.
Full Disclosure: Super Mrs. C. is not “old.” She and her husband and hero, “Steadfast Mister,” are “seniors,” but they are neither elderly nor old. They will, however, cop to “older-ish.”
Both climate and weather have been the subject of much discussion as, across the globe, they have been unpredictable and unusual. Super Mrs. C. and Steadfast Mister live in New England, and no matter what anomalies we may experience, winter here reliably acts like winter.
You may have heard about our variable February weather. One day it was near 70 degrees and a record breaker. Forty-eight hours later we were shoveling at least seven inches of snow. Clever meteorologists dubbed it “The warm before the storm.” Our snow was heavy. It began as light, pretty stuff. Then it was watered by rain and salted by sleet. It was still lovely to look at, but not something you wanted to lift if you didn’t have to.
I love to shovel. I’m slow, and probably inefficient, but I enjoy the task. Steadfast Mister is generally the Captain of Team Shovel, and I bow to his superior ability. However, the Captain has recently been sidelined by some needed joint replacements, so I, the co-Captain, Super Mrs. C., have been called up for duty. The co-Captain is ready and willing…
