The opposite applies to the States. "Black" is a very comfortable term for us, as is "people of color." To refer to someone as "colored" is beyond rudeness. It is insulting and reminds us of the days of apartheid in South Africa when "colored" was a racial category and, in the States, a reminder of the Jim Crow South.
