They are innocent, and we were innocent. Someone else's misperceptions of our innocence does not make us less so. Sadly, it makes us even more vulnerable because we're so surprised by the view that others take. Our job is to warn our kids that racism is out there, while simultaneously doing everything possible to ensure that they get to enjoy their "kid time" as kid time including we adults not doing things that make them "grow up" before their time.
