We know how traumatizing it is not only to live our own lives but also to relive the horrific experiences of others. I know how uncomfortable it was for me to read about the experience of Jews during the Holocaust, but I learned a great deal and have been forever empathetic. The choice of whether or not to continue the class was certainly up to you, but you might have had a lot to teach those folks. (Maybe you'll try it again?)
