While I am fortunate to live a comfortable life, I am always aware of how much more equitable it would be if my enslaved ancestors were recompensed, even in some small way, for their centuries of toil. Those of us who are descendants of enslaved people live much less comfortably than do most whites, who bear neither our economic nor social burdens. While I'm not unaware of the contributions and sacrifices that members of other groups have made, I'd argue that we people of color have toiled more, been compensated less, and are rewarded less even today.
