Why are you blaming films that, for the most part, mirror the unfair black experience in the U.S., especially for black women? The Color Purple and Waiting to Exhale were works first created as fiction, not film, but they are works of fiction based on the lived lives of black women. In order for black women not to get mistreated on screen and in fiction, we must first ensure that they are not mistreated in real life.

We're sorry that watching Celie getting slapped around larger than life was the visual equivalent of a cold shower for you, but there are too many of us getting that treatment, and TOO MANY BLACK MEN who are misogynistic and proud of it. Heck, how many black men voted for Donald Trump because they secretly (or not-so-secretly) wish they had his supposed riches and arm candy? Now THAT'S what effed up, and it didn't take a film to do it.
