Scientists in 19th century England began documenting changes in the general temperature after the growth of coal-fired industry. Jimmy Carter had solar panels installed in the White House in 1979, only to have them removed by Ronald Reagan. Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless work on Global Warming and has had it dismissed as a “slideshow” in a right-wing meme. Bill Nye, the Science Guy, thank goodness, just received a Presidential Medal of Freedom for his scientific instruction, including a nice video on science-backed voting. Maybe we’re catching up.
The common denominator is that these men have been denied, denounced as foolish, or just plain lied about, because it is easier to pretend that some facts don’t exist rather than change our behavior because they do.
