I Don’t See Color
OF COURSE YOU “SEE” COLOR:
YOU SEE IT UNTIL YOU DON’T
We have all heard the declaration, “I just don’t see color.” We have all dismissed it as ridiculous. Generally, people say this when they want to prove that they have no prejudice and view all people the same way.
Of course we see color. There are colors we prefer to wear. We see the difference between blondes and brunettes, and we know who has more fun. We know that red cars are hot and sexy, which is why you don’t generally see (or at least I haven’t) cherry-red minivans. When someone’s skin is different than yours, you see that without prompting. Color is a salient characteristic. Color matters. You see it until you don’t.
My attorney told me never to make my opponent’s argument, but I’m kinda going to do that.
