Sometimes the greatest barrier to openness that many whites have is the backlash from other whites, who will let you know pretty quickly that you’d better stay on your own “side.” Many well-meaning people would (secretly) like to be more open, but when faced with the absolute shunning they would get from their “tribe,” they stay in their closed circle, wanting to get out, but afraid of the consequences.
