You are more generous in your thinking toward black parents who spanked/spank, then I am. I do not think of spanking one's kids as "saving them from a fate worse than death" at the hands of a racist, white society. I think of it as the act of frustrated, powerless people, who hungered for respect outside of their homes, and who insisted upon it at home, or else.
