You Heard it Right. Black Folks do not eat Pumpkin Pie
Some History and a Recipe for Sweet Potato Pie
It’s that time of year. We’re cleaning the house, putting those extra leaves in the table, getting out the good dishes, and buying that pie. That pumpkin pie. I am Black. If you invite me to your house, please do not serve me pumpkin pie. Black folks do not eat pumpkin pie, except under duress and extreme displays of good manners.
I already know that there’s no such thing as a universal, so
cool your jets and save me the indignant responses.
There are people of color out there from whom you cannot pry that pulpy, grainy sin against the senses from their fingers or remove it from their mouths, which obviously lack taste buds. Yuck. Your cards are in jeopardy. Watch your backs.
That having been said
Pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin scones, pumpkin bread pudding, pumpkin soup; they’re all good. That pie, however? No. Black Folks in general do not enjoy pumpkin pie. It is slimy, grainy, and lacking in flavor. The only way to make it acceptable is to dump in a bunch of other ingredients, mainly sugar, and turn it into pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin chiffon, or some other confection where the pumpkin is kept to a minimum.
